I have read “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho a few years back. And like many others, I loved the book. The one thing that stood out to me was the word “maktub”, or the concept of destiny. (I need to re-read that book, and if you haven’t read it yourself, you really should.)
Apparently, in English, it roughly translates to “It is written”, or that everything has been predestined by God. I like the idea that there are some people that you were meant to meet, experiences that you were meant to have, or places that you were meant to see. In the end, everything is meant to be.
Obviously, while destiny is a beautiful concept, I think it can also be a dangerous concept – we can start to think that our lives are controlled by fate alone, and we can become complacent in moving forward. But I think that we are neither the captain of our own destiny, nor is our lives fully controlled by fate – I think it’s a delicate balance of both.
